The story begins in one of the families where Beth Emhoff and her husband Mitch Emhoff live a quiet life and raise a son. One day, Beth arrives from a business trip from China, coughing a little, then ends up in the hospital and suddenly dies from an incomprehensible diagnosis. Doctors shrug. They only guess that a new virus has appeared. People are gradually starting to learn about a new epidemic that is worse than AIDS and the bird and swine flu. Not a good cough spreads quickly to all cities of the planet...
