For the brutal murder, which he did not commit, Henri Charriere, a safecracker, was sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to penal servitude. He was nicknamed "Papillon" because of a tattoo on his chest, where this very symbol of freedom was tattooed. Henri makes two attempts to escape.
